Review

Battlestations: Pacific is an action video game in which you will play as the United States or the Empire of Japan during the WWII events. It is the sequel to Battlestations: Midway and it gives you the possibility of changing the story if you select the Japanese campaign or just to revive the current historical events of the Pacific aerial and nautical battles. Battlestations: Pacific also includes some tactical elements that enhance the gameplay and add some diversity in order to not be repetitive.

Besides, it provides different types of airplanes and battleships, each one with their own characteristics. Battlestations: Pacific will test your reflexes when it comes to avoid the enemy’s attacks, unless you decide to perform a kamikaze attack in order to destroy heavy units with Japan. Since you are in real battle controlling one of your units, you can decide which path the rest of your army will follow. This allows you to create unique strategies to face your enemies.

Among its modes you will find the classic campaign mode and the multiplayer one. This last mode allows you to choose between different modalities such as dual, siege or Island capture and it accepts up to 8 people playing simultaneously. These increase sharply the duration of the game with the addition of online content. Nevertheless, if you get bored, you can enjoy the last release of the Assassin's Creed saga, which has also a multiplayer mode with which you can play with your friends.

Simultaneous playing

The multiplayer mode includes five new stages compared to Battlestations: Midway that you can play against other people or with AI-controlled characters. In ‘Island Capture’, every team possesses two headquarters to start launching its units. The more enemy bases you capture, the more naval supplies or unit types you can unlock. The game ends when time runs out, one team losses all its bases or a team gets to the set score.

In ‘Duel’, two teams with the same class units combat until one of them has not any left. In ‘Competitive’, all players cooperate to complete certain mission but trying to reach the highest score each. In ‘Siege’ one team defends an island while the other tries to attack it, the one who losses is the one who runs out of resources. In ‘Escort’, a team will be responsible of protecting one or more units from the destruction of the enemy.

Battlestations: Pacific maintains the intent and essence of the original Battlestations, correcting some basic shortcomings as the lack of control points and adding some new elements such as capturing islands. It is more than twice as long, with the inclusion of a multiplayer skirmish mode and improved utilization is assured. However, problems taken directly from the game system itself still present, and that this will not end curious mixture leaving satisfied purists strategy or action, and only continue to enchant both genders equally.

Battlestations: Pacific (PC) Parts of action and strategy are quite well balanced. Much longer than the first installment and fixes some important bugs. Impressive variety of units, with three major classes: aircraft, ships and submarines. I fully dubbed into Spanish.

Multiplayer has clearly improved over the original. The items are up to eight players, four against four, and found five game modes, varying in the goal to achieve but It is the most entertaining at the same time difficult, so it is only recommended for those who have already gained some experience.

Pros

  • Impressive variety of units, with three major classes: aircraft, ships and submarines
  • Parts of action and strategy are quite well balanced.

Cons

  • Absence of a tutorial that clearly explains the complex system of play.
